To see a poor argument for welcoming Clemens back to the Sox, see Alex's blog. To summarize it for you: The Red Sox have had some eccentric pitchers in the past that we liked. Clemens is an asshole. Let's welcome him back. Plus, Duquette was an asshole, and he didn't like Clemens, so that's even more reason to get Clemens to return.
First off, being eccentric has just about nothing to do with it. I really don't care much that Clemens sometimes wore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shoelaces. Or that his kids names are incredibly self-centered. Whatever. I do care that he is a jerk. If he had taken a minute of his time to say something to the fans when he left here, it would have given him just enough goodwill to be able to come back, probably. He might have said something like this,"I had a great 13 years in Boston. Dan Duquette sucks. I wish he wasn't coming between me and the fans here. Hopefully I can have a relationship with Blue jay fans similar to the one I have had with Red Sox fans. I hope you guys don't hold this against me. You guys always supported me, even when I blew big games. You even convinced yourselves that I didn't really ask out of game 6, and that I was justified to get myself kicked out of a playoff game. I just need you to support me one more time." Very simple, very brief, and that's all it would have taken. But it couldn't have happened that way, for one very good reason already mentioned: Clemens is an asshole.
As for Duquette siding with Carl Everett, that's irrelevant. My opinion of Clemens is independent of what the Duke says or does. Sometimes Duquette was right, sometimes he was wrong.
I want to win a championship here as much as anyone. But I want to do it the right way.
Perhaps I'm being petty. But like I said previously, I'm not writing him off completely. But he has to prove himself to me first.
