So I've been getting kind of upset at Colin Powell recently. I had previously pegged him as the voice of reason within the administration, the man who would keep us from plunging ourselves into a stupid war, the man in the best position to restrain the more belligerent elements, like Donald Rumsfeld and Richard Perle. So when he came out as a hawk I was naturally very disappointed. When he fell back on lying, it lowered him a lot in my eyes. I mean, trying to claim that Bin Laden's recent speech proved the connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq when Osama specifically denigrated Husseinwould seem to show a lot of disdain for the American people. But then I thought that maybe he knew exactly what he was doing. The best way to beat an argument is to make it badly. My new theory is that this is what Powell is doing, that he is trying to sabotage the administration's push for war from within. Of course I could be wrong, it's just a theory, but I now have some hope for Powell. And by the way, does MSNBC have any credibility now?
Here are a couple of interesting arguments against attacking Iraq. I don't think there was anything in them that I disagree with more than at a quibbling level. And here's Harry Browne going after the administration.
On a mostly unrelated note, here's an article on NASA and the Simpsons episode where Homer was an astronaut. Good stuff. Remind me what are the (good) reasons we're sending people into space. Please?
