Here's a good primer on the philosophies of liberty and state.
So has the chaos that has followed the fall of the Iraqi government demonstrated the necessity of an encompassing state? Hardly.
Has the success of the military operation in Iraq shown that the use of force (i.e., state action) is the way to solve our domestic problems? I think not.
This is a disturbing (but not terribly surprising) account of the USA PATRIOT Act gone awry. And by awry I mean used in the only way it can be used.
